  • Kiosk,the Ninth Coffee
Kiosk, the Ninth Coffee is the result of our ongoing exploration into the “publicness” of contemporary commercial space. Located within the semi-open atrium of Joy City Changfeng in Shanghai, the project faces an outdoor plaza and sits close to the urban street, benefiting from favorable climatic conditions and a continuous flow of pedestrians. This setting offered us an opportunity for experimentation — to create a “micro urban anchor” that not only serves commercial functions, but also holds the potential for urban intervention.
We adopted the spatial prototype of the “kiosk” as our point of departure. Commonly found in parks, street corners, and beaches, kiosks are small-scale structures that nevertheless possess a strong social function. Through a transparent and fully open design, the coffee-making process is exposed to the public. Two entrances unfold around a central core, forming a “walk-through” spatial island that blurs the boundary between shop and city, while allowing possibilities for staying, encountering, and unplanned everyday activities.
The “Urban Repair Toolkit Library” represents a philosophy of action — a repair practice grounded in specific situations and flexible interventions. It seeks potential within the cracks of regulated spaces, reconnecting discarded materials, underused skills, and fragmented social relationships. As one of the 29 participating “light intervention” spaces in the exhibition, Kiosk, the Ninth Coffee offers a prototype for coexistence and mutual permeability across boundaries through this mode of situated and adaptive repair practice.
